When the Rotary Club of Monash Glen Waverley (RCMGW) approached Glen Waverley Secondary College (GWSC) about installing a Rotary peace pole in their grounds we were not anticipating the enthusiastic response. They were interested in six! A survey of their large multi-cultural college community, including families, students and teachers revealed a background of over 40 ethnic languages and dialects. Not surprising given student numbers of near 2400, making GWSC one of the largest colleges in Victoria. They had condensed this to a request for 24 different language decals (4 per pole) with the peace message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth”. And if at all possible, could they be installed in time for planned college World Peace Day Celebrations in September?
The Rotary Club of Monash Glen Waverley was delight to accept the challenge and a magnificent response to the rush order from Michael Rabey (Founding Coordinator, Rotary Club of Canberra Burley Griffin) and Heidi Unferdorben ( Peace Poles Oceania), and by the college maintenance staff, saw the poles produced and installed in time.
Members from RCMGW attended the inauguration and unveiling of the GWSC Peace Pole Garden at the college on 19th September. The ceremony, prepared by Head Teacher Mark Robinson, was MCed by Assistant Principal Dan McGuire and involved the college Principal Suzanne Plant, college captains, Rotary, college staff and many GWSC students.
RCMGW President Raj Susarla read the latest available message of Peace from the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr Antonio Guterres.
Particularly moving was the reciting of the message, “May Peace Prevail on Earth” lead firstly by the Principal in English and then by students in the 24 different nominated languages.
With a plaque recognising Rotary’s contribution, the Peace Garden, with its six peace poles is located in a main college thoroughfare and will provide a constant reminder to passing students and visitors of the necessity to bring peace to the world.
As stated by the GWSC college captain, Arjun Kapoor, “each year our College community will hold a ceremony at the foot of our Peace Poles ……and in doing so will join with the Canberra Rotary Peace Bell and the Australian World Peace Bell in Cowra as symbols and messengers of hope and peace to all Australians”.
